Al Capone: The Untouchable Legend is a new one-hour biography of the most notorious gangster in history. On January 17th, 1999, Al Capone would have celebrated his 100th birthday. His exploits in the early part of the century have inspired authors, journalists and filmmakers. Myths have always been woven around the figure of Al Capone. Born in Brooklyn, he began his career in crime as protege to New York underworld boss Frankie Yale in the early 1920’s, and then moved to Chicago where he made himself a multi-millionaire from the protection business, gambling, brothels, and speakeasies. He is most infamous for planning the massacre of seven members of a rival gang on Valentine’s Day in 1929. This was also the year the Justice Department named Eliot Ness to form a special crime-busting squad which came to be known as “The Untouchables.” In 1931 Alphonse Capone was convicted on income tax evasion and began an eleven year sentence in the Federal Prison on Alcatraz Island. Capone died in 1947 and is buried in Chicago’s Mount Carmel Cemetery.
But who really was this man? How did this child of Neapolitan immigrants become the most legendary gangster of the “Roaring Twenties.” Using historical film footage, movie scenes, and dramatic recreations filmed on location in Chicago, Brooklyn, Ellis Island, Florida’s Palm Island, and Alcatraz, Al Capone: The Untouchable Legend not only depicts the rise and fall of “Scarface,” but also looks behind the myths at the private family man. Interviews with Capone’s nephew Harry Hart, and with Capone experts John Binder, Dennis Hoffman and William Balsamo all help to illuminate the social and economic milieu of the ’20s and ’30s that led to the rise of the “Mafia.”

When a Hollywood heartthrob (Matt Dillon, playing a Brad Pitt look-alike) “outs” his small-town high-school drama teacher Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline) during the Oscar telecast, the entire (fictional) town of Greenleaf, Indiana, wonders if Howard’s really gay. More to the point, Howard wonders, too–quite a dilemma considering his pending marriage to Emily (Joan Cusack), who’s patiently tolerated a three-year engagement. While a TV reporter (Tom Selleck) covers the ensuing furor, screenwriter Paul Rudnick and director Frank Oz make good-natured humor their highest priority, turning the “crisis” of coming out into a laugh-out-loud spin on conventional romantic comedy. The result is a film that delivers constant laughs and a golden opportunity for its fine cast to show off their considerable comedic talents–especially Cusack, who deservedly earned an Oscar nomination for her hilarious performance as the bride who’s almost as confused as her would-be husband. That Rudnick and Oz have made a great comedy that’s both old-fashioned and relevant to the late 20th century is no small feat, but In & Out has no hidden agenda apart from its triumphant desire to entertain. –Jeff Shannon

On her perilous journey to The Hagu (Verhoeven’s hometown), brunette Rachel joins the Resistance and changes her identity to blonde Ellis de Vries. Her next order of business: infiltrate Gestapo headquarters. Like many Verhoeven heroines, Rachel aces her assignment–and then some. First, she seduces the handsome Captain Muntze (Sebastian Hoch, The Lives of Others), then she falls in love with him. Muntze, who returns her affection, isn’t what he appears to be, but their relationship puts both at great risk. At this point, the filmmaker expertly kicks the proceedings into high gear, before concluding on a bittersweet note. Naturally, since this is a Verhoeven picture, there’s plenty of wry humor and uninhibited sexuality along the way. Starting with 1985’s Flesh + Blood, the Dutch director released an American movie every two to three years. After the poorly received Hollow Man, however, Verhoeven took a six-year break. Black Book, a return to his native Holland, was worth the wait. (He began work on the screenplay in the 1980s.) It works triple-time as a thriller, a tribute to Holland’s Jewish population, and a poison pen letter to the Dutch opportunists who would attempt to sell them out. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
